OUR HISTORY

Chobani founder, Hamdi Ulukaya, created Chobani on the belief that people have great taste; they just need great options. In 2005 Hamdi purchased an old Kraft plant in New Berlin, N.Y., and hired four ex-Kraft employees along with Yogurt Master, Mustafa Dogan. Together, Hamdi and his team got to work on perfecting the recipe for authentic strained Chobani Greek Yogurt. In October 2007—over 18 months later—the first cup of Chobani hit shelves. Since then, Chobani has grown from five to over 1,200 employees strong. Today, Chobani is the #1 selling yogurt in America and continues to grow.

As part of Chobani’s Nothing But Good philosophy, the company is committed to supporting local farmers and strengthening their surrounding area economies. Chobani uses milk from surrounding farms and gives 10% of its annual profits to charities worldwide through its Shepherd's Gift Foundation, the company’s charitable arm.

THE SHEPHERD’S GIFT FOUNDATION

The Shepherd’s Gift Foundation is committed to empowering those who exemplify what it means to be a Shepherd – one who gives without expecting anything in return, working selflessly for a better world, while possessing a generous spirit. Through funds, partnerships and programs, the Shepherd’s Gift Foundation shines a light on those that energize positive, long-lasting change in their communities and the world around them. As Chobani’s charitable arm, the Shepherd’s Gift Foundation gives 10% of the company’s annual profits to causes that are solution-based and grassroots in spirit. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
  • What’s makes Chobani yogurt “Greek”?
    • Many people think that “Greek yogurt” refers to where we make our yogurt, but it actually describes how we make it. We use an authentic straining process that removes excess liquid from our yogurt. It’s this process that gives Chobani its delicious, creamy texture and high protein content.

  • Why is Chobani better for you than regular yogurt?
    • Chobani is a naturally good for you indulgence. The authentic straining process we use to make our hand-crafted yogurt results in a product that's packed with protein, and is naturally lower in sodium, sugar, and carbohydrates.

Chobani contains five types of live and active cultures including three strains of probiotics. Plus, it's deliciously creamy.

  • How do you pack so much protein into Chobani?
    • All yogurt starts the same way: bacterial cultures are added to milk, which ferment the sugar naturally found in milk (called lactose) and turn the milk into yogurt.

But at Chobani we take this process one step further. We strain our yogurt, which removes the excess liquid — consists of water, lactose, and whey.

Whey is naturally found in milk and contains several nutrients including whey protein. Our proprietary straining process allows us to separate and remove only the liquid portion of the whey, leaving the whey protein intact in Chobani and making it so high in protein.

In fact, whey protein contains more essential amino acids than any other type of protein. So the high whey protein content of Chobani makes it the perfect snack to get you through your mid-afternoon slump!

  • Is Chobani organic?
    • We started Chobani to make high-quality, delicious yogurt accessible to everyone so that all people, regardless of income, would be able enjoy our real yogurt made with only natural ingredients. As a result, Chobani isn't organic. Producing it as such would force us to raise our prices, making Chobani harder for some people to afford.

Also, it's important to us to support our local farming community. We work closely with a dairy co-op who sources the milk we use in Chobani from local-area farms as opposed to having organic milk shipped to us from farther away.

  • Does Chobani contain synthetic growth hormones?
    • No way! We only use milk from cows not treated with synthetic growth hormones.

  • Does Chobani contain Live and Active Cultures?
    • We proudly use Live and Active Cultures and do not heat-treat our yogurt after fermentation so as to preserve these cultures. In fact, Chobani was awarded the National Yogurt Association’s Live and Active Culture Seal, which recognizes products that have high levels of Live and Active Cultures.

  • Does Chobani contain probiotics?
    • We add three types of probiotic cultures to Chobani—Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidus, and Lactobacillus casei.

  • Is Chobani gluten-free?
    • Yes, Chobani is naturally gluten-free, which means our yogurt contains no wheat, rye, barley or other gluten-containing thickeners, gelatins, gum blends, flavorings or stabilizers. However, the creations enjoyed at Chobani SoHo may vary. Just be sure to ask our expert Yogurt Masters if you’re unsure!

  • Is Chobani Kosher?
    • Yes, Chobani is certified by the OU, which means our yogurt is kosher. However, the ingredients used in Chobani SoHo creations and our facilities are not. Ask our expert Yogurt Masters and they’ll be sure to share Chobani SoHo’s kosher options.

  • I’m a vegetarian. Can I eat Chobani?
    • Chobani is naturally thick. No gelatin or animal-based thickeners are used so it’s a great, high-protein option for vegetarians.

  • I’m sensitive to lactose. Can I eat Chobani?
    • Sensitivity to lactose varies by person, but many individuals who experience discomfort from lactose can eat Chobani without any negative effects, as our yogurt is naturally over 95% lactose free.

This is due to the straining process we use to make Chobani, which removes much of the lactose from our yogurt. Also, the probiotic cultures we add to Chobani help break down lactose so it’s easier to digest.

  • Is Chobani safe for people with food allergies?
    • Chobani is free of wheat, nut, soy and shellfish allergens. However, it’s important to note that Chobani does contain milk. And creations enjoyed at Chobani SoHo may include nuts and wheat. Just be sure to ask our expert Yogurt Masters which ingredients are included.

  • Can I recycle my Chobani glass jar?
    • Here at Chobani, we’re committed to environmentally responsible production practices, including our packaging. The glass jars served at Chobani SoHo are made with only natural materials and can be recycled. Take it a step further and return your Chobani glass jar for $0.25 off your next yogurt creation at Chobani SoHo.

Additionally, all of our pre-packaged cups are made from #5 plastic, which is widely recyclable so it’s more Earth (and people) friendly.
